Frequently Asked Questions

are doulas clinical professionals?

A doula is not a clinical professional. We are trained to guide and provide emotional support and physical comfort measures, but cannot diagnose, or give medical treatment. A doula cannot and never will replace a doctor or midwife.

Are DOULAS THE SAME AS MIDWIVES?

No, they’re quite different! The most significant difference being that a MIDWIFE is a clinician; someone who can provide medical treatment during pregnancy, birth, and immediate postpartum period. A DOULA provides a mom and family with emotional, informational, and physical support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period.

is it true that doulas are just for hippies or rich people?

There are quite a few myths surrounding doulas. Doulas are for absolutely everyone, not just those who are more “new age”. I encourage you to research the science-backed studies about the benefits of doulas. You can find a lot of information on my “Info + Resources” page in the main menu. Furthermore, there are so many doulas with different specialities, personalities, and overall style, so you can find someone who fits well with your plan and family.

There are various programs that offer discounted or even volunteer doula services. Many doulas who are at the beginning of their career will charge less to gain their certifications. Please consider these options if finances are a challenge!

I already have a family member who will come help me at birth and postpartum, do i still need a doula?

The reality is, most family members aren’t trained the way doulas are. During birth, a doula is there to support you, while a family member may need to experience their own emotions as things progress. Doulas stay by the moms side, guiding her through each step. We do not take the place of a partner or family member, rather we fill in where we are needed.

Many new moms are shocked when postpartum, family members seemingly forget they just gave birth and want to oogle over the baby. This is totally normal! But moms need care too. A doula is a wonderful option to help a mom postpartum, while family members can help focus on the baby, we focus on YOU and your recovery.

are doulas covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, while it’s still changing, most insurance companies do not cover doula services. With more studies showing the benefits of a doula, it seems the world is slowly catching up in terms of providing financial help with these services. Currently, Tricare is running a trial period of covering specific care for doula and lactation services. I am in the process of becoming a certified provider through Tricare so I can give care to my fellow military families. Please reach out for more specific information.

Do you offer military discounts?

Yes! As a military wife, I understand the challenging role we take on. I’m more than aware that because of the nature of a military career, we often don’t have a full support system nearby. I am currently in the process of registering through Tricare as a provider for doula services, which currently covers birth, and up to 6 visits. Please reach out to me if you are a military family so we can discuss payments/options.

what areas do you serve?

I currently serve mothers within the Los Angeles area. My more specific region is in the South Bay; including Torrance, Gardena, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Carson, El Segundo and the Beach Cities. I also service areas in Long Beach. Please reach out if you’d like to inquire about your location.

are consultations required? are they free?

Yes and yes. I require consultations because the reality is, we both deserve to have a good fit in one another. This is a way for us to connect, talk, go over your questions and wants within a doula, and make sure I can provide those services. Consultations are not too long (usually about 45 minutes to an hour) and provide a great first meeting before we begin working together. Whether you work with me or another professional, I highly recommend seeking a consultation first.
